Bernie Wrightson
Bernie Wrightson was a defining illustrator of horror comics and American gothic imagery. Co-creator of Swamp Thing with writer Len Wein in 1971, he became renowned for his meticulous linework and atmospheric grotesquery. His multi-year project illustrating Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1983) is regarded as a landmark of the medium. Wrightson’s later career included conceptual design on Ghostbusters and ongoing collaborations with Stephen King.

Batman: The Cult (DC Comics, 1988) is a four-issue prestige-format miniseries by writer Jim Starlin and artist Bernie Wrightson. A landmark of late-1980s superhero horror, the story traces Batman's capture and psychological breaking at the hands of a charismatic cult leader beneath the Gotham underground. Wrightson's painterly rendering and architectural interiors make the series one of the most atmospheric Batman books ever produced.
