John Byrne
British · 1950
John Byrne is one of the most influential mainstream comic artists of the late twentieth century. His celebrated run on The Uncanny X-Men with writer Chris Claremont (1977–1981) remains a reference point for the genre, as does his subsequent solo stint on Fantastic Four and his 1986 reboot of Superman (The Man of Steel). Byrne's clean, classical storytelling and confident figure work helped shape the visual language of American superhero comics for a generation.
