John Buscema was one of the defining artists of Marvel Comics' Silver and Bronze Ages. Trained in classical draughtsmanship, he brought a monumental sense of anatomy and dynamic staging to titles including The Avengers, The Silver Surfer and, most notably, Conan the Barbarian — a sustained collaboration with writer Roy Thomas that defined the visual template for heroic fantasy in American comics. His instructional book How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way (1978) remains a foundational text for the medium. His brother Sal Buscema pursued a parallel career as a prolific Marvel penciller.
