About the artist

John Byrne

John Byrne is one of the most influential mainstream comic artists of the late twentieth century. His celebrated run on The Uncanny X-Men with writer Chris Claremont (1977–1981) remains a reference point for the genre, as does his subsequent solo stint on Fantastic Four and his 1986 reboot of Superman (The Man of Steel). Byrne’s clean, classical storytelling and confident figure work helped shape the visual language of American superhero comics for a generation.

About this series

X-Men

The X-Men, created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, became a cultural phenomenon through Chris Claremont's seventeen-year writing tenure alongside artists including John Byrne, Dave Cockrum, Paul Smith and Marc Silvestri. Subsequent generations — Grant Morrison with Frank Quitely and Ethan Van Sciver, Jonathan Hickman's Krakoan era — have made the franchise one of the longest-running experimental projects in mainstream American comics.
