About the artist

John Buscema

John Buscema was one of the defining artists of Marvel Comics’ Silver and Bronze Ages. Trained in classical draughtsmanship, he brought a monumental sense of anatomy and dynamic staging to titles including The Avengers, The Silver Surfer and, most notably, Conan the Barbarian — a sustained collaboration with writer Roy Thomas that defined the visual template for heroic fantasy in American comics. His instructional book How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way (1978) remains a foundational text for the medium. His brother Sal Buscema pursued a parallel career as a prolific Marvel penciller.

About this series

Fantastic Four

The Fantastic Four, created in 1961 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, is the inaugural title of the Marvel Age. Kirby's sixty-issue run with Lee is regarded as one of the foundational statements of the modern superhero comic; later significant runs by John Byrne (as writer-artist) and Carlos Pacheco have kept the title central to Marvel's creative identity.
