About the artist

Tim Sale

Tim Sale was an American comic artist best known for his long collaboration with writer Jeph Loeb on a series of colour-themed superhero graphic novels — Batman: The Long Halloween, Batman: Dark Victory, Daredevil: Yellow, Spider-Man: Blue and Hulk: Gray. Sale’s stylised, heavily shadowed compositions owed a particular debt to Alex Toth and Bernie Krigstein; his work on The Long Halloween was a major visual reference for Christopher Nolan’s Batman films.

About this series

Batman: The Long Halloween

Batman: The Long Halloween (1996–1997) and its sequel Dark Victory (1999–2000) are DC Comics prestige serials by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale, casting the early years of Batman as a sprawling noir mystery across the holidays of a year. Sale's stylised, Toth-inflected chiaroscuro has become a defining visual template for the character — a major reference for Christopher Nolan's film adaptations.
