About the artist

Carlos Giménez

Carlos Giménez is a foundational figure of contemporary Spanish comics. Through autobiographical cycles such as Paracuellos — an unflinching account of the Francoist social-aid children’s homes — and Los Profesionales, a roman-à-clef about the Spanish comics industry of the 1960s, he pioneered a deeply literary approach to the medium. His science-fiction series Dani Futuro (with writer Víctor Mora) is a classic of European bande dessinée for younger readers. Giménez has received Spain’s National Comics Prize and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most important cartoonists.

About this series

Paracuellos

Paracuellos (from 1977) is Carlos Giménez's unflinching autobiographical account of the Francoist "Hogares de Auxilio Social" — the social-aid homes for the children of political prisoners in which he grew up. Across six volumes of short vignettes, Giménez produced one of the most searching works of Spanish post-war memory in any medium.
