About the artist

Esteban Maroto

Esteban Maroto is a Spanish illustrator whose ornate, art-nouveau-inflected drawing style made him one of the most recognisable Selecciones Ilustradas artists to reach the American market in the 1970s. His work appeared extensively in Warren magazines (Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella) as well as in Tower, Red Sonja and numerous cover assignments. Maroto’s sinuous line, decorative black shapes and mythological sensibility remain widely imitated.

About this series

Vampirella

Vampirella (Warren Publishing, from 1969) is a gothic horror character whose defining visual identity was established through the Selecciones Ilustradas artists of the 1970s — most notably José "Pepe" González, whose long run with writer Archie Goodwin produced the imagery by which the character is still best known. She has since been continued across multiple publishers and generations of artists.
