About the artist

Jordi Bernet

Jordi Bernet is a master of black-and-white draughtsmanship in the European tradition. The son of cartoonist Miguel Bernet (Jorge), he achieved international recognition for his long association with Torpedo, Enrique Sánchez Abulí’s hard-boiled crime saga set in 1930s New York. Bernet’s uncompromising contrast, fluid body language and confident brushwork have made him one of the most respected figures in contemporary comics storytelling, with subsequent work on Kraken, Clara de Noche and Jonah Hex.

About this series

Torpedo 1936

Torpedo 1936 (from 1981) is the hardboiled crime serial by writer Enrique Sánchez Abulí and artist Jordi Bernet (who succeeded Alex Toth on the first story), set in Depression-era New York. Following the nihilistic hit-man Luca Torelli, the series is regarded as a landmark of European-styled American noir, with Bernet's confident brushwork establishing a benchmark for black-and-white crime comics.
