About the artist
David Rubín
David Rubín is a Galician cartoonist who has become one of the most internationally recognised Spanish authors of his generation. After self-publishing in fanzines from 2001 he debuted in long form at Astiberri, where his two-volume El Héroe (2011–2012) reimagined the labours of Heracles in pulse-pounding cinematic colour. The Eisner-nominated Beowulf (2013, with Santiago García) confirmed his international standing, and he has since drawn The Rise of Aurora West with Paul Pope and J.T. Petty, Ether with Matt Kindt, Rumble with John Arcudi and Cosmic Detective with Kindt and Jeff Lemire.

Batman, created in 1939 by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, has been continuously published for more than eight decades. Defining bodies of work include Neal Adams's gothic 1970s run, Frank Miller's 1986 The Dark Knight Returns, Jim Lee's Hush arc with Jeph Loeb, and Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's ten-year Batman run at the core of DC's New 52 relaunch.
