Juanjo Guarnido is a Spanish artist whose career spans animation (Disney Studios Paris, Walt Disney Animation) and bande dessinée. With writer Juan Díaz Canales he created Blacksad (2000–), an anthropomorphic noir series that has won every major European comics award including multiple Angoulême prizes. Guarnido’s watercolour-painted pages combine the timing of animation with the expressive chiaroscuro of classical film noir, and have established him as one of the most internationally celebrated Spanish cartoonists of his generation.
