Joost Swarte is a Dutch cartoonist, illustrator and architect whose refinement of the Franco-Belgian ligne claire tradition earned that very label — he coined the term ligne claire in a 1977 exhibition catalogue. His fastidious, geometrically composed short stories and illustration work have made him one of the most distinctive European cartoonists of the last half-century.
