Harold “Hal” Foster was a Canadian-American illustrator whose Sunday newspaper strip Prince Valiant (1937–) established a standard of classical draughtsmanship in the American comics form. Drawing on his training as an advertising illustrator, Foster brought detailed historical research, grand landscape composition and a formal prose caption to the funny pages, producing what is widely regarded as one of the finest narrative strips ever published.
