Gilbert Shelton is a foundational figure of American underground comics. His Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (from 1968) — published by Rip Off Press, which he co-founded — chronicled countercultural California in a style that blended R. Crumb-inflected cartooning with affectionate satire. Wonder Wart-Hog, created a few years earlier, is among the first underground superhero parodies.
