Alex Ross is an American painter whose photorealistic gouache technique reinvented the look of mainstream superhero comics in the 1990s. His miniseries Marvels (1994, with writer Kurt Busiek) and Kingdom Come (1996, with writer Mark Waid) became landmarks of the decade, bringing a dignified, almost civic-monumental gravity to costumed heroes. Ross’s subsequent painted covers and series including Justice and Earth X have kept his classical style in continuous demand from both major publishers.
